Vaginal cysts are enlarged pouches of tissues found inside the lining of the vagina. In the majority of the cases, these cysts are filled with vaginal fluids or air. There are many kinds of vaginal cysts. Vaginal cysts often result from severe trauma or injury to the lining of the vagina. Common examples that can be cited are the damages or tears that happen during delivery, episiotomy, etc. The different types of cysts commonly found in women are Bartholin Cysts. it is a small cyst that develops on the sides of the Bartholin gland. It can either happen on one side or on both sides. In the majority of the cases, the Bartholin cysts develop because the Bartholin gland gets clogged, commonly because of any trauma or injury. Gartner’s Duct is a dual duct that is found in the fetus. These ducts disappear after the baby is born. However, in certain cases, the ducts do not disappear and eventually, they might get filled with mucus and swell into a cyst years later. A Mullerian cyst is also one of the common vaginal cysts found in women. It is a cyst related to the fetus as well. Mullerian cysts are small cysts that can develop inside the wall of the vagina. These types of cysts are caused by the leftover material as the fetus grows.

TREATMENTS

Diagnosis
The patient is subjected to a vaginal examination, to diagnose a vaginal cyst. In some cases, there might be small lumps on the lining of the vagina or protruding out of the vagina. The doctor might also do tests like MRI, CT scan, or ultrasound to assess the location and size of the cyst.
Surgery
In the majority of cases, vaginal cysts do not cause much trouble to the patients. Routine exams are enough to keep track of the changes that might happen to the cyst.in some cases, a biopsy might be required to rule out the possibility of cancer. In a biopsy, a small part of the cysts is removed and observed under the microscope. Soaking in a sitz bath will also provide tremendous comfort to the patient. Antibiotics can be prescribed to treat vaginal cysts as well. Bartholin cysts usually require draining. The health care provider will insert a catheter into the cyst and drain it. There is also a procedure called “Marsupialisation”. In marsupialization, a small incision is made on the cyst to drain it and then the sides of the incision are sutured to heal it.
